So on the beginning of my first week of blogging, I decided to pen an open letter to my mentor Mimi Goodwin...
Dear Mimi,
I had no idea that when I bought my sewing machine in 2011 what exactly I was gonna do with it, (that machine would go on to sit in the box for almost 2 years). In early July 2013, I discovered your blog on a friend's Facebook page, little did I know that this one click would change my life forever!
I was headed toward a transition that I didn't see coming, my wedding engagement was coming to an end and it devastated me and I felt lost. I knew I needed something to take my mind off of the pain I was feeling. I was headed in a downward spiral and no one knew it but me, and you Mimi Goodwin saved me from myself.
So after I tried and SUCCESSFULLY completed 3 of your tutorials on the first try, I knew I had found my therapy. You were and still are always so kind, answering inbox questions without hesitation, offering help whenever I asked. You will never know how much that means to me!
Meeting you, not once, twice, but 3 times has been life changing! Because of you I took my very first plane ride and vacation at the age of 42...Fast forward to now and here I am starting a blog and a potential business. I only hope I can be half of the inspiration to someone else that you have been to me. I promise to make you proud!!!
Your #1 fan,
Lawana
NOW INTRODUCING: #MiMicItMonday
While I get lots of inspiration from my mentor Mimi Goodwin, I get inspiration from other different sources also. I didn't have a lot of style growing up...well I didn't think so. My grandma kept us in very nice clothes from Macy's, Haynes and Sears but it wasn't what the average kid was wearing. High School was totally different, Jordans and Guess jeans were in and I had neither.
Now since I've learned to sew, I can now create my own style, but I'm still not quite sure what that style is yet! I have tried making several different things to find my niche and its clear I have a love affair with Maxi Dresses and Skirts, and Fitted Midi Dresses. However its also a safe bet that I'm totally obsessed with hoods, pockets and bows...LOL!
I see things on other bloggers, whether handmade or RTW (ready to wear), music videos, celebrities, regular people, the news (Liz Cho and Sade Baderinwa the bomb.com) Instagram, Facebook and my friends inbox me inspiration pics all the time. While I consider myself an intermediate beginner, a lot of things go into my inspiration files for when I get more experience.
So on Mondays I will take a look I am inspired by to mimic...sometimes it may be the same fabric but always with my own little twist to it, So who better to Mimic first than my fabulous mentor Mimi and this super cute cape (which is a free sew along on YouTube) and a DIY black and white striped dress...
